GPS Secret Location Experience

Last week you learned how to use a GPS. One of the activities we did asked each student in the class to hide a granola bar on the school property and mark the location with the GPS. Then you exchanged your GPS with a classmate's and reversed the process or found their location. How successful were you? Describe your thinking as you found the classmate's secret location.

  1. I thought I did a pretty good job locating the hidden granola bar. However, I struggled finding it once I got to the area it was hidden. The granola bar was hidden in an area where there were large amounts of weed and grass. But eventually, I was able to find the granola bar in a Keystone Box. Even though, I had to scramble around for a while, I thought it was a good start for me using the GPS to find my destination. The GPS was very effective and it guided me very well.

  2. I was successful at hiding the granola bar in a "secret" location but definitely not successful in finding where my partner hid the granola bar for me to find. I realized that the GPS and the satellites above aren't completely accurate. My GPS sent me to the same longitude degree but was slightly off on the latitude degree. The effectiveness of the GPS was fine, I guess I was just expecting it to lead me to the granola bar, like a treasure map...but since there aren't satellites EVERYWHRE in the sky, it is highly unlikely to get to the exact location of whatever you try to find. And in my case, a granola bar was sneakily hiding in a tree while I looked like a fool pacing back and forth in a grass field.

  3. Christine and I both hid our granola bars in very secret location, assuming that our GPS devices were 100% accurate. The devices were not that accurate, so we didn't find our granola bars. Interestingly enough, our GPS devices seemed to be inaccurate by approximately the same degree. They were both about thirty feet off the mark. Christine very cleverly hid her granola bar inside a bin outside the gymnasium entrance (thanks Christine), but the GPS led me to a point between two pine trees on the lawn. I hid mine in a crab apple tree and Christine ended up in the middle of the front lawn. It was an entertaining activity, if not a rewarding one.

  4. I found myself to be pretty successful when on the hunt for the granola bar. Knowing my classmate, I kind of had an idea how he would hide it. So going off of my knowledge of him, I found the granola bar. It was placed under some grass and branches on the left front side of the school beneath a tree. The granola bar I hid was placed near the track up on a staircase hand rail. I ended up having to help my partner find my hidden granola bar. The GPS was a great help in this activity and it seemed to work correctly and efficiently. But, my partner kind of thought otherwise because he had problems following his GPS.
